Our Story

The first Hotel built on this site was a wood and iron structure. The first Licensee was Mr John Brennan in 1885. This Hotel burned down some years later when a fire swept through the townsite.

In it’s place, the Joyce family, who then owned a small farm on the present site of Walgy Farm, built a two story brick building and named it the Railway Hotel. The Joyce Family managed the Railway Hotel very successfully for many years. Records indicate that around 1889 considerable additions were made and in 1908 the Railway Hotel was described as having four sitting rooms and seventeen bedrooms.

At This time it was owned by H Smith but the licensee was F.S. Squires. W.J Clegg, F Cornelius, Miss Young, G Wyatt and one or two others were all tenants of the Railway Hotel and during this time efforts were made to improve the layout of the Hotel. It was not until Mr George Wyatt that value was ever obtained for the money spent on the Railway Hotel. in 1933 Mr Wyatt had the whole building remodelled to what we now refer to as Art Deco style. Mr Wyatt also changed the name of the Railway Hotel to the Hotel Beverley. Looking at the building today, it is very hard to tell that the remodelling ever took place. Not only was the exterior streamlined, but the whole interior was extensively altered and improved. The Hotel now has an imposing Entrance Hall, Lounge, Dining Room, Sports Bar and Beer Garden with similar improvements upstairs.

In 1946, Mr James Cassidy, late of Katanning, secured the lease from Mr H Boys, the then owner.

In 1973 the Smith family came to lease the Hotel Beverley from Mr & Mrs West who had run the Hotel for about 10 months. The Owners at this time were Mr & Mrs Jones, son Chas and daughter Ev. Mr A.E. (Eddie) Smith took over as licensee and the Hotel was run by the family, which included his wife Olive, daughter Gail son-in-law Ron, son Rodney and daughter-in-law Gail. After 19 months his daughter Gail and her husband returned to Dongara. The rest of the family carried on and renewed the lease for a further five years. At this time the family had the option of buying the Hotel outright and did so in 1984.

In 1995 the Smith Family, after 22 years in the Hotel Beverley, leased the hotel to John and Glenys Lane for 15 years.

In 2017 my wife and I bought a property in Beverley as a weekend getaway and soon fell in love with the place, making it our full time home shortly thereafter. In 2021, after frequenting the Hotel Beverley and being charmed by its warm atmosphere, sense of community and old style character, we purchased the Hotel and I became Licensee and Manager.

Together we are working on slowly making improvements to the beautiful heritage building and business as we can, delivering great food, service and entertainment for the community and visitors to the town.

We would like to thank all patrons for their support of our small ‘local owned’ business.
